But REALLY – let’s talk about eating homegrown food! According to the 2009 Edibles Gardening Trends Research Report conducted by the Garden Writers Association Foundation (GWAF) over 41 million US families – or about 38% of all households – grew a vegetable garden in 2009. The report goes on to state that the majority of those folks plan to grow as much, or even more edibles in the coming season. The reason they gave? “…to supplement household food supply.” Or in plain talk – TO EAT!
You can talk all day about preparing the soil, starting seeds indoors, succession planting, cool season crops and container gardening – but at the end of the day it’s all about the food. Delicious, fresh, healthy, and oh-so-local food.
So I hope you’ll join me at one of my lectures at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show. I promise to supply you with lots of tips for your growing success but even better – I’ll have recipes and lists of fruits and vegetables that thrive in the NW garden.
The eating is going to be very good in 2010.

We’re one of those families and this year will be our first with a garden. I’m sooo excited and can’t wait for first frost! Don’t really know what I’m doing but hubby says he does :Op I’m a quick study though. We did container gardening last year to get a “taste” of it and planted strawberries, cherry tomatoes & herbs. From there we – and the kids – we hooked. I’m also shopping for a CSA in case we’re.. ahem.. not sucessful. I’m ordering both of your books too

Hi Sarah – I wish you all the luck in the world. I actually think growing in the ground is a lot easier than in containers so you’re bound to be successful. As far as last frost…there’s lots you can plant before then that will tolerate cold weather. Unless you’re in the DC area – yikes. Thank you so much for the good will and book juju. Don’t hesitate to shoot me a question if you get stumped.
