Farm stay 1.0

So far so good…well, mostly.

My drive to beautiful Art-Isle farm on Whidbey Island, my home for the next 12 days,  was uneventful and quick.  For all that I feel so far removed, I’m really only about 60 miles north of Seattle. With an eclectic assortment of boxes, bags and a duffel filled with clothes I’ve tried to anticipate what I might need for this adventure.  Laptop & printer-check; camera, tripod, cables, cords, charger, MANUAL-check; clothes-whatever; books-check, check and check.  I even brought a bouquet of paperwhite narcissus that was in full fragrant bloom.

Princess Phoebe

Arriving at the farm the first order of business was to introduce myself to HRH Phoebe, the fairest Poodle in all the land. Phebes is a bit fussy and finicky (or would that phussy & phiniky?).  She’s very protective of her turf and I was a bit anxious about how I would be greated when I entered the empty house on my own. All was well and apparently I have been deemed worthy of walking, feeding and generally pampering HRH for the indefinite future.

office to go

I set up my mobile office, made a cup of coffee and set off to view my barnyard brood: Angus, Fergus, Penny & SuSu the goats and 12 chickens.  It’s a peaceable kingdom – for now.  In fact, I think Penny and I have a special bond…either that or she’s trying to eat my coat.  I thought her gentle head butts were quite affectionate.

Penny likes me

The chickens?  Well they’re chickens and they make me laugh.  Ever watched a chicken from behind run around a barnyard?  Me neither – it’s a riot!  I got quite a scolding when at first I couldn’t figure out how to release the hens from their coop into the pasture.  Phoebe was no help at all…and eventually I found their little trap door and they spilled out of their shelter all the while cursing me in chicken-talk and probably calling me names.  Poor things, I am such an amateur!  But I’m about to get an education.

I’m jealous…it’s a fantasy that 12 days would probably cure…enjoy the solitude.

Hi Lorene – I thought about this post when we were up on Whidbey last week. Got the name of the farm wrong – thought it was Raven & Shovel. Oh well, maybe we’ll see if we can visit those cute goats/chickens next time! Looks like a lovely place and seems like you had a good stay in the country but didn’t need to import all the animals back to the city. I have chicken envy too sometimes but have never gone for it. I agree, it is probably just lust for fresh eggs.
