…sweep the old year out the door.
When my daughter was quite young this was our annual ritual at the close of each year, complete with broom and of course, lots of sparkly confetti, bits of which I’m sure are still in the front garden.
Now, as a family we adhere to the fortune cookie school of the future. You never know what you’re going to get…or even what it means, but it sure is delicious!
I love the notion of a clean sweep – a fresh start, the newness of single digits and the promise of a new calendar. Resolutions? Not so much. Mostly I just like another chance to try again. …Try to keep the gravel weeded …try to keep up with paperwork and bills …try and remember to breathe deeply of fresh air amidst the crush of responsibilities and deadlines …try to make more time for myself and my family… try to be a better friend, throw more parties, & take more walks.
As for 2009? The birth of 2 books (this one and this one), several fabulous road trips to here and here, plus here and here; branding my first cow, exciting speaking and writing opportunities, 132 blog posts, dozens of jars of pickles, countless new and “virtual” friends and a family of hummingbirds and a PIG (!) all outweigh my loss and minor misfortune. I am so very lucky and blessed.
Happy New Years!!!

What a delightful New Year’s tradition, sweeping the old year out the door with sparkly confetti—if you have small children. Can’t see my husband and I doing it, ha. May you have a productive 2010, Lorene, in words and in the garden!
Have enjoyed your blog this year. Hope 2010 brings you lots of creativity!!!

Dear Compost – thank you so much for your kind words and support!
Somehow the sparkly confetti has outlasted both kids who are now grown!!!
