If you’ve got five minutes and old LP’s in your basement – and really, who doesn’t – you can make these last minute gifts that will rock your gift list and not your wallet.
Gather your records. Yes – I asked permission before I transformed the bootlegged Bruce Springsteen Fire Wax…but apparently I wasn’t supposed to touch the 45’s of Seattle’s own The Heats.
Turn the oven on to 200F.
You’ll need a cookie sheet and an oven safe glass or bowl. I like this pyrex drinking glass for the extra ripples (or would that be rolls) it allows.
Place the record on top of the glass/bowl, centering the label. Put into the oven but don’t go far. It only takes 3-5 minutes for the heat to soften the vinyl and “slump”. (Don’t look at the dirty oven…)
Working quickly, remove the piece from the oven and leaving the record on top of the glass/bowl work into the ruffles, crimps, ripples, rockin’ and rollin’ to your pleasure. This is not an exact science, but if you feel you need to tweak your design (are you spinning old classical music discs?) just put the whole thing back in the oven for a few minutes to re-soften.
That’s it! Fill with mandarin oranges, chex mix, candy… anything
I think even the Boss would approve!
