Early tablecloths were more than just a tasteful accompaniment to matching napkins. Instead the cloth covering the table was originally meant to serve as a towel for guests to wipe their hands and faces after dining. Maybe now you won’t sweat the cranberry sauce dribbles and gravy stains.
and another thing…
Parsley has long been considered an antidote to poison. Historically, the placement of a sprig of parsley on a guest’s plate indicated that no poison was intentionally added to the meal.
