Saving money and shopping the backyard

by admin on November 30, 2009

I just went shopping…in the backyard.  I mean, yes, I did go to the grocery store where regardless of what I buy the total seems to come to $100.00.  (The cost of allergy medicine gets me down almost more than the sneezing and wheezing.)

Lately, what with the rain, the dark, the cold…and the rain, I find that I’m not very inclined to go outside and pick veggies and herbs for our dinner.  Our backyard is dark as night and I don’t relish stumbling around for the arugula.  So I’ve vowed that whenever I go grocery shopping I’ll come home and immediately go out back and harvest what I think I’ll need for several days.  If fresh herbs in plastic containers can hold in grocery coolers and veggies ship from the world over they can certainly hold in a vase on my counter for several days.  And maybe the sight of all these frilly green bouquets will inspire me to to green up our meals.

My wallet feels “greener” already!  This afternoon’s haul:  Fresh bay, thyme, parsley, arugula, & kale.  Priceless!
