my prize 'Charentais' melon
You know that scene in the movie “Castaway” where Tom Hank’s character beats his chest and hollers
“I. HAVE. MADE. FIRE!”
Well that’s sort of how I feel about my little French ‘Charentais’ melon plucked right from my very own backyard! This probably seems a little over-the-top to gardeners outside of our beloved – but typically chilly – Pacific Northwest. I have NEVER before had a melon ripen for me. Sure, one year I planted the heirloom watermelon, ‘Moon & Stars‘, and yes, I did get one smallish fruit. But the world will never know if it was ripe because I was so pleased with it that I didn’t let anyone cut it open to eat!
Not so this year. This year’s warm weather has brought me all sorts of tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, cucumbers, peppers and eggplant. But THIS! A melon!!! I never dared to dream… ‘Charentais’ are tiny, delicate, single serving sized, incredibly fragrant, fruits about the size of a croquet ball. I’m just about to sit down a to a solo meal and I fully intend to eat the whole thing.

I totally understand. We just had a party celebrating the first melon grown in our garden. It ended up being delicious. So when will you have the celebration?
Oh I celebrated last night…as I devoured the entire precious little orb all by myself!!! Yummmm.
