My home garden is on this weekend’s Northwest Horticultural Society’s annual “Meet the Board tour” where NHS members and their guests get to gawk at geeky gardeners. I don’t know that we’re all so geeky…I just liked the alliteration! Personally I was a lot more geeky and game to garden before this heat spell! My story for this weekend:
It is what it is!
I’m not trying to put on any airs here or “tut tut” about how everything was oh-so-much bettter last week. There is some serious garden mayhem underway here at the Edwards Forkner homestead. The paper boy NAILED my cool Kalanchoe with the Sunday paper and now there’s gravel, dirt and little bits of brown fuzzy kalanchoe guts all over the front walk; I can’t seem to make myself clean it up.
I’m going to put a sign on my hostas in the front yard declaring them to be the rare “Swiss (cheese) cultivar”. They are so uniformly riddled with snail damage it almost DOES look deliberate – it’s all in our perception, no? But mostly, this weekend will be the final wake for my dear Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ as she seems in her last gasp. I think it only fitting that we all pay tribute to the very humbling reality that regardless of how “expert” a gardener we each claim to be, we are forever adapting to change and inevitable loss.
Of course the flip side in this garden game is gift and generosity. The sweet peas are blossoming, the raspberries are revving up for their second flush and look out – Here Come the Tomatoes!!!
If you are in the West Seattle area this Sunday between 12-5pm and would like to stop by and visit just leave me a comment below and I’ll email you directions to the garden.
Eucryphia x nymansensis
This is my wonderful Eucryphia x nymanensis – erstwhile home to the Hummingbirds. She’s in full glorious, wanton bloom and sure to steal the show on Sunday. The heat has been causing her blossoms to wilt midday but each evening she revives nicely and by morning she’s fresh and lovely once again. A real “Blanche Dubois” of the backyard. I love it!

Have an awesome tour, Lorene!! Be sure to post pics on Facebook!!
How do I get there? – Are there cocktails if I can later?
Can we come by even if we aren’t members? I went to the website but couldn’t find it mentioned. I would love to see your Eucryphia.
Hi Jean, I sent you an email with details…hope to see you Sunday!
Honey, there are always cocktails;-)
Thanks Riz, unfortunately my camera broke last weekend! I feel like I’ve lost a limb…
Sorry about the paperboy’s bad aim! Grrr. I would be furious. Thanks for the invite, I’d love to come but we have visitors in town so I might not make it. Nice of you to open it up to the blog crowd! Thinking of you as I slooooooooowly make my way through parts of your wonderful plan. Much still to do, but it’s gradually changing. At an awkward stage at the moment, but oh well. At least I don’t have a garden tour coming through!
I like your ‘Swiss Cheese’ hosta sign idea. You should totally do it. Hosta ‘Fromage de la Suisse’?!
