These days I’m not actively building my ornamental borders. That’s not to say I don’t still buy perennials and browse the flowering shrubs at the nursery. Even as I write this little 4″ pots patiently wait to be planted as I sow more lettuces, coddle the fava beans and fuss over young blueberry plants. I’m definitely focused on edibles; hey, who isn’t?
Even though my mind may be occupied with succession planting schemes and how to hook up my rain barrel I have been amazed at the wild ride my existing garden offers this distracted and oh-so industrious gardener during these early days of spring. Has this generous display always been there and I was just too busy acquiring more to take note of what I already had? Waves of blossoms, emerging foliage and fragrant bulbs are like a vestigial limb, reminding me of my passionate, ornamental gardening persona.
Just in time for April’s Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, here is my note of gratitude to that hardworking (if maybe slightly obsessive) former self and only a partial visual record of a garden that puts forth beauty whether I pause to enjoy its gifts or not. I so glad I stopped to enjoy it. All you busy, highly motivated, hurrying-to-buy-plant-sow gardeners out there – STOP, look around, breathe in and enjoy!

Tee hee – I had to chuckle when I saw “the clematis that ate my house”. I’ve been hacking away at my ‘Sweet Autumn’ since 2004.
I agree, we should all stop and enjoy the blooms in your gardens this spring! There is sure to be something to stop us in our tracks. Thanks for sharing your blooms with us for bloom day!
